There has been a reported government-ordered civil investigation with the city of Sao Paulo's announced sponsorship of R$2.5 million ($1.25 million US) for the UFC on FX 7 event.
Brazilian media have reported that a directive signed by Sao Paulo District Attorney Valter Foleto Santin said the sponsorship was "unnecessary, unjustified and excessive use of public resources." The directive reportedly recommended the cancellation of the event and a suspension of the financial commitment.
UFC Managing Director of International Development Marshall Zelaznik stated on the issue: "Let's be clear: There's no chance that the event will be canceled. We have seen the reports, but we haven't received anything official from any of the government authorities about the investigation being reported. I can tell you that when we get the materials that not only will the UFC but our partners at IMX will cooperate fully." Zelaznik also added: "We've been speaking with the government here for over two years now, and the government here has opened their arms to us. We're proud to be here, and we're willing to cooperate in any way necessary to make sure there isn't any stain, if you will, from the headline that we've seen."
Regarding the sponsorship, Zelaznik also said the figure of R$2.5 million isn't wholly accurate, that "It's a valuable sponsorship. It's important. We're bringing real value to the city and to the state, frankly." He also added, "I can tell you that we're not swayed at all in our commitment to the city of Sao Paulo and to the country of Brazil. We'll be back, and this is nothing more than getting the information in the right peoples' hands so they can come out with the right conclusion."
UFC on FX 7 is going to go down on Saturday at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo. The main card will be broadcast on FX with prelims set to be shown on Fuel TV and Facebook.
