Demetrious Johnson spoke with MMAJunkie about how his impending wedding almost kept him from a rematch against Ian McCall, and his second chance to get down to 125 pounds. Here are some highlights:
About training during his honeymoon: "I wanted the fight… Prior to me and McCall's first engagement, I had already set plans to get married to my fiancee in Hawaii. So I didn't want to hold up the division. Me and my coach talked about it."
"I trained all the way up to the point that I went out to Hawaii. I trained twice a day in Hawaii, so it wasn't really a honeymoon. Thankfully, my wife was very supportive. When I got back, I finished a three-week training camp, and so we took [the fight]."
About possibly facing Joseph Benavidez in the future: "I think we're both at an advantage. [Benavidez has] had the time to sit on ice and fix the things he's going to be better at, and I've got a second chance to get down to 125."
About getting down to 125 pounds: "It's good for me to get a second chance to drop down to 125 (pounds). The last time I did it, my diet was horrible. I stepped in the octagon that night at maybe 132. Tonight, I stepped in at 140, so I did a good job listening to my coaches."
